A journey into creativity, curiosity, making and the gifts of the darker evenings.

As my enormous harvest season begins to come to a close, I’ve been thinking about November and the wonderful possibilities that come with the deepening of the year.

The evenings are getting longer. The garden is slowing down. The work of gathering, preserving, storing and preparing for winter is gradually coming to an end.

And I’ve been thinking about how people might have spent those long, dark evenings in years gone by.

Before electric lights, television and all the distractions of modern life, winter evenings were often spent making things. Knitting, sewing, crochet, carving, whittling, painting, weaving, mending and creating.

I love imagining people gathering for winter solstice celebrations, bringing gifts they had made themselves during those dark evenings. Something carved, stitched, woven or painted. Something that had taken time, imagination and care.

There’s something so lovely about that image. The darkness of winter becoming a time for creativity, making, learning and sharing.

And it has really captured my imagination.

So this November, our 21-day yoga journey is going to be called CREATIVE.

A little creative experiment

Alongside our morning yoga practice, I’m inviting you to join me in a simple creative experiment.

15 minutes of making something each day.

That’s it!

I haven’t even decided what my project is going to be yet.

It might be painting, drawing, carving, sculpting, mosaics, scrapbooking or something completely different.

I’m quite excited about beginning without knowing exactly where it’s going to lead.

There’s something wonderful about giving ourselves time to play, experiment, make mistakes, learn something new and follow our curiosity.

And I’m interested in what happens when we give creativity a regular place in our lives.

Fifteen minutes might seem like very little, but over 21 days, that’s more than five hours of creative time!

Imagine what might emerge from simply turning up and giving something our attention.

There’s a lovely connection here with the themes we’ve been exploring over the past few months: connectivity, continuity and harvest.

The small things we do regularly begin to shape our lives. We create habits, develop skills, discover interests and gradually build something through the simple act of returning.

Your invitation

As always, our morning yoga is the heart of the journey.

Twenty minutes of yoga every morning for 21 days.

If that’s all you do, that’s absolutely perfect.

But if you feel inspired, you’re very welcome to join me in the creative side project.

You might spend 15 minutes knitting, painting, sewing, drawing, playing music, working with wood, writing, or learning something completely new.

You might choose one project to develop over the 21 days, or explore something different each day.

Perhaps there’s something you’ve always wanted to try but never quite made time for.

Perhaps there’s an unfinished project sitting in a cupboard somewhere, waiting for you to return to it.

Or perhaps you’ll begin with a blank page and see what happens.

The invitation is simply to make a little room for creativity in your day.

Creating space through movement

I’m also curious about how our yoga practice supports creativity.

How movement changes our energy. How settling and quietening the mind might make room for new ideas. How being more present in our bodies helps us notice the impulses, interests and possibilities that can get lost in the busyness of everyday life.

Over our 21 days, we’ll continue to move, strengthen, stretch, balance and explore, while also making a little room for imagination, curiosity and play.

I love the thought of spending November in this way.

Moving together in the mornings, then perhaps finding a little pocket of time during the day or in the evening to make something with our hands.

And as we move towards the winter solstice, perhaps we’ll have something we’ve made, something we’ve learned, or simply the lovely experience of having spent some of the darker evenings doing something creative.

Perhaps even a handmade gift for someone we love.
